Lots of non league clubs have argued that the system of only two clubs being promoted from the National League into League 2 is unfair. I believe that argument has been strengthened this season.
It is tough on Rochdale to accumulate over 100 points and not get automatic promotion. While in League 2, five teams have averaged less than a point a game but only two of them will be relegated.
The National League is no longer the Dog and Duck League. It is in effect a League 3. It has a lot of former Football League teams, several well supported via large fanbases and with money behind them.
The likes of Rochdale, Southend, Carlisle, Scunthorpe etc would be far better assets to the Football League than some of the teams towards the foot of League 2 this season. Why should it be made more difficult for them to get out of their division than it is for teams to be promoted out of League 2 (three automatically, one more via the play offs)?
