Even “universal” basic income would have to be means tested. There are approximately 55 million people aged 16 or over in the UK, so a reasonable UBI of, say, £1,000 per month would be ridiculously expensive.
Why should those with assets and/or savings be paid this money by the state? UBI should be for those who really need it, just like the state pension.
