No Clear Favorites for the Upcoming Kentucky Derby

The 143rd edition of the Kentucky Derby will bring together some of the best horses and jockeys in the world. Fans of this sport are looking forward to see the lineups for all the events, but they are particularly interested in the first leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. Over the last couple of years, bookies always had clear favorites, but this is no longer the case in 2017. All the important bookmakers listed here are leaning on Always Dreaming as the main favorite, but only barely. The main challenger is Classic Empire, last year’s best 2-year old and the differences between them are
insignificant.

Three Weeks of Triple Crown Races Ahead

The Kentucky Derby is the highlight of the year for US horse racing aficionados and a major event for fans from all over the world. The fact that the race is too close to call only adds to the dramatism and there are plenty of horses who would cause big surprises. Gunnevera and Irish War Cry are breathing down the necks of the two main favorites and McCracken, Gormley and Hence are not far behind. Any of these horses could run away with the trophy in what promises to be one of the most contested Kentucky Derbies of the decade.

If Classic Empire wins the Kentucky Derby with Julien Leparoux as jockey, he will become one of the three horses to win the main event after prevailing in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Last year, he also won the Breeders’ Futurity and in 2017 he confirmed his quality by winning the Arkansas Derby on April 15. All the details regarding the Derby field will be revealed 48 hours before race day, as the post-draw is announced on May 3 on Kentucky Derby’s social network pages.
