Darren Goodbody’s best bets – Saturday 23rd July

14.45 ASCOT

Thirteen go to post in what looks a very competitive juvenile encounter, two stand out for me in this contest in ‘Marie of Lyon‘ and the selection ‘MAGICAL FIRE‘. Richard Fahey’s charge Marie of Lyon is a surprising 20/1 shot for this and she held her won when she managed the finish third to Nations Alexander in the Listed Empress Stakes at Newmarket last month.
She was full of excuses that day attempting to win on Heavy ground and was only out gunned in the final 100 yards, her defeat of Final Reckoning has been franked by the Godolphin colt has the fourth Jacquard who recently went on to win at Catterick, i definitely would not put anyone off backing her at 20/1 each way.
Stat attack, Stall five has won this race on seven occasions just over 36% return and the lucky entry here goes to O’Callaghan’s Magical Fire. She is the most experience in the race and is looking for her second win of her career. She is one that will relish firm ground this afternoon which has seen her win her maiden at Fairyhouse and adapted well to Newmarket run when second to Roly Poly in the Group 2 Cherry Hinton last month. She is a another that will come on again, and this drop in class could see her go extremely close.
Best of the rest could come from Karl Burke’s ‘Seduce Me‘ who ran a blinder to win her maiden at Ripon by six lengths over La Casa Tarifa who is a good yardstick I think. the other is Mark Johnston’s ‘Kilmah‘ who finished a close fourth in the Cherry Hinton last time out, but could find matters tougher trying to reverse the form with the selection this afternoon.
MAGICAL FIRE : 1pt each way @ 8/1 (BOG)
16.30 ASCOT
KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES (Sponsored by Qipco) (British Champions Series) (Group 1)  1m 4f
Dartmouth returns to Ascot after defeating Highland Reel recently in the Group 2 Hardwick Stakes by a head, ‘Dartmouth‘ is a versatile character who has seen him win the Johnny Bret Handicap also over course and distance last year. He is unbeaten in 2016 and has got better and better with every run this year, the fact he has found battling qualities makes you wonder if there is much more to come from the son of Dubawi who has had a couple of hard races of late.
I do fancy though ‘HIGHLAND REEL‘ to add this to his resume and reverse the defeat to Dartmouth this time around. The jet setting four year old has been successful in the US and Hong Kong in his career and the quickening ground should not influence him considering he ran away with last years Secretariat Stakes on firm ground. He looks to act on anything from good and above and is the pick of Ryan Moore.
One at a price is Graffard’s Erupt who is not out of it by any means around this company this afternoon. The 2015 Grand Prix De Paris winner has looked in need of the two previous runs and looked back to his best when finishing runner up in the Prix De Saint-Cloud, Stephane Pasquier who I admire as a jockey and who is probably very underrated in his native France, has ridden him apart from one run on his maiden outing as a three year old. He is another by Dubawi so has to be respected in what looks a very interesting renewal.
HIGHLAND REEL : 1pt Win @ 5/2 (BOG)
Have a great day and be lucky
