Charlie McCann picks out the best bets for day 1 of Newmarket’s July meeting

Charlie McCann picks out the best bets for day 1 of Newmarket’s July meeting Perfect flat racing ground (good) for the start of Newmarket’s July meeting and I hope to see Atty Persse (1.50) gain a first group success having overcome a wide draw to land the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot last time. That 3L success was over 12f and today’s slight step up in distance should suit with James Doyle back in the plate. The selection is 3/1 (from 11/4) with BetVictor and that looks a fair price for this son of Frankel. The colt has brought along steadily by Roger Charlton but if he is to be a realistic St Leger contender (16/1 at BetVictor) he must go close this afternoon. Raheen House is the highest rated horse in the […]

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com on Wednesday’s cards

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com on Wednesday’s cards The three-day July Cup meeting starts at Newmarket tomorrow with the opening Bahrain Trophy one of three fascinating Group races on the card. Royal Ascot winner Atty Persse heads the market at 11/4 with BetVictor although he is rated 8lbs lower than Brian Meehan’s Raheen House (4/1). The feature of Yarmouth’s seven-race card is a decent 10f handicap and there is plenty of overnight rain forecast. The filly Dubara is certainly bred to appreciate any significant rain and will be tough to beat despite the fact that she is 4lbs higher than when runner up at Salisbury last time. Omeros is one to consider if the market speaks in his favour, but I am sweet on the chances of First Voyage (3.45) who drops back in trip having […]

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com dissects Tuesday’s cards

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com dissects Tuesday’s cards  Commonwealth Cup winner Caravaggio heads the market at 10/11 with BetVictor to maintain his unbeaten record in the July Cup one of the highlights of what is a Super Saturday of racing. Today’s highlight is the listed Pipalong Stakes at Pontefract and Dawn Of Hope (3.10) will appreciate the drop in class having dipped her toe in Group company last time when beaten less than five lengths in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at the Royal meeting. There is rain forecast at the west Yorkshire track, which will certainly suit the Roger Varian-trained filly who may have most to fear from Hughie Morrison’s Pirouete. A market move for the newcomer Walton Street would be worth noting for Godolphin but the filly Love Conquers (4.10) showed much improved form […]

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com assesses the weekend’s racing action

Charlie McCann of BetVictor.com assesses the weekend’s racing action Wonderful cards at both Haydock and Sandown this afternoon and the feature race at the Esher track is the Gp 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes one of the great flat races of the season as the classic generation meet their elders for the first time over ten furlongs. Some of the greats of the turf, Nashwan, Dancing Brave and more recently Sea The Stars and Golden Horn, have won this great race as three-year-olds. Three of that illustrious quartet had previously won the Derby whilst Dancing Brave finished runner up at Epsom having, arguably, been given too much to do by jockey Greville Starkey. Cliffs Of Moher (3.35) is no Dancing Brave but the colt did finish second in the Derby when he came into the straight […]

Mutakayyef Will Need Special Effort at Goodwood

Mutakayyef Will Need Special Effort at Goodwood   Source: Ascot via Twitter Mutakayyef suffered a defeat at the hands of Ribchester at the Queen Anne Stakes, but will have the chance to respond at Glorious Goodwood. The six-year-old had been one of the leading contenders to take the crown, having previously enjoyed success at Ascot. However, William Haggas’ charge did not have the pace needed down the final furlong to mount a sufficient challenge to overcome his rival, losing out by one and a quarter lengths. Ribchester’s performance at the famous event has seen him rise to prominence for the rest of the flat season, especially at the Sussex Stakes when the pool of horses widens to include Churchill and Barney Roy, who competed in the St James’ Palace Stakes. Mutakayyef remains a strong contender based […]
