Just on Baie Des Iles, Ginger. The forecast earlier in the week suggested the possibility of a heavy ground National and that combined with the novelties you mention probably triggered the ‘taking no chances’ big market move. Still has a likeable profile, though having run with credit in the Welsh and Irish nationals; the later as a 5 year old.

Just read Vtc’s monster race guide and had to back Carlingford Lough as well. The way he finished off some of those big race wins offers encouragement, especially if still in the mix approaching the elbow. Looks a top shout at those odds.

    Current bets:
    Anibale Fly 18’s
    Baie Des Iles 40’s EW
    Carlingford Lough 75’s EW

    My post from yesterday:
Not sure how much rain is forecast to fall on Friday, but assuming it could be significant, I’ve decided to add Baie Des Iles each way.

2006: Lumped on Number6valverde and made more cash than I’d ever won before. Was one of those years where friends, family and colleagues all went with whatever I picked and thought I was some sort of tipping master.

They all came back the following year but my Point Barrow call never got further than the first fence

Will probably depend on how the ground is with Vicente. If, as I expect, there’s not any good in the description, he’ll probably be pulled late on and head to Ayr. Nicholls’ certainly seems keen on a 3rd go in that one.

Those trends would also eliminate 4 of the last 8 winners; including 2 of the last 3. The compressed weights, softer fences and reduced distance has bucked a lot of old trends in recent years.

If there was to be a dry spell, I would be very keen on Verdana Blue. Granted it’s a big if as the rain is never far away in western Scotland. I was at Ayr 3 years ago and played a similar waiting game with Henderson’s Sign of a Victory who hadn’t had his ground all winter; it came good on the day but was just touched off by Cheltenian in a photo.

Similar logic applies to Fagan on the same card. If there was decent ground I’d have a small double stake, but couldn’t back either ante post with the weather scuppering their chances.

Backed Anibale Fly after connections stated their intention to run a week or so after Cheltenham.

Clearly handles a big field and has strong form in both handicaps and at the top level. Seems to appreciate ground with plenty of give but at the same time I wouldn’t want it to get too testing carrying 11’7. If it comes up soft to heavy I will add another further down the weights. Vintage Clouds would be interesting but must be doubtful of getting in.

Was really looking forward to seeing this horse at Aintree. The way it traveled to the front last time out was all class.

Remember the poster, Steeplechasing mentioning something might be a miss as it passed the winning post at Ascot. Looks like that may be the case.

I’ll be keeping an eye on wherever King’s Socks goes next. Traveled smoothly throughout and joined the leading pack 4 out but found little after jumping the second last. Possible that the much talked about heavy ground approaching home put paid to his chances, having been ridden widest of all through the race.
