Darren Goodbody previews the Ryanair and JLT Chases

Darren Goodbody previews the JLT and Ryanair Chases RYANAIR Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh have won this on three ocassions from six renewals and once more are very well represented here with Un De Sceaux. The 2015 Arkle Trophy winner who was also runner up in the Queen Mothers Chase last season comes into this off the back of landing the Clarence House Chase when defeating Uxizandre by five lengths, which saw on that day recent Queen Mother Chase winner Special TIara way back in fifth over thirty lengths behind the winner. He looked a peach that day at Cheltenham last time out, his jumping was slick, never looked in trouble despite his awkward moment when almost blundering his win two out, but he asserted in fine style. One of his main adversaries looks to […]

Betway’s Tommy Sutton with Thursday’s best bets

Tommy Sutton of Betway with Thursday’s best bets Top Notch to add to Henderson’s Festival success in the JLT We start with the 1.30pm JLT Novices’ Chase, where Willie Mullins’ Yorkhill is a short favourite. He’s won eight from a possible nine, including the Neptune at the Festival last year. While Ruby Walsh will be hoping this can be his first winner of the week, I think Top Notch is the one to beat here. The six-year-old is currently in the form of his life, having won his last four in impressive fashion. He ran in the Triumph Hurdle and was just pipped by stablemate Peace And Co two years ago, but was a bit out his depth in the Champion Hurdle last year. Back for a third attempt, he looks far more suited to […]

Charlie McCann previews Day three of the Cheltenham Festival

Charlie McCann previews Day three of the Cheltenham Festival Day three of the Cheltenham Festival begins with the JLT Novices Chase and it is possible that the enigmatic Yorkhill could come home alone if his jumping stands the test. He can be very keen, however, and whilst I acknowledge that he is the most talented horse in the race he will have to jump better than he did in his last couple of starts and he is reluctantly overlooked. Politologue and Disko are much respected but I am going to take a chance on Top Notch (1. 30) who has lived up to his name in recent starts winning his last four including in Grade 1 company last time. The selection is 4/1 at BetVictor and I would be disappointed if he didn’t make the […]

Darren Goodbody’s Champion Bumper Preview

Darren Goodbody with a 10/1 shot for the Bumper Probably my favourite race of the entire four days, a race that can be a good guide for the following year’s Supreme Hurdle. The Irish have taken three of the past five renewals, but it has gone to British based trainers for the past two years and they are looking to make it a three timer. Willie Mullins has landed this race eight times which includes training the 2012 and 2013 winners, including the following year’s Supreme winner Champagne Fever. I have been whittling this year’s race down and managed to get it down to four contenders. I will start at the obvious place in Willie Mullins’ Carter McKay who heads the market. He will come into this with a 100% record intact. For me at […]

Charlie McCann previews a weekend of racing action

Charlie McCann previews a weekend of racing action The weekend racing has a lull before the storm feel with Cheltenham galloping towards us at a rate of knots and the waiting is almost over for the biggest week of the racing year. The big betting race today, however, is the Imperial Cup and top-weight Fixe Le Cap is likely to have his supporters having looked a juvenile who could go to the very top when winning his first couple of starts last season for Nicky Henderson. The gelding has not been seen on the track since finishing in midfield in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham last March but has been dropped 4lbs for that effort and he holds a couple of engagements at the Festival next week. You have to go back to 2010 for […]
