Glorious Goodwood Thursday tips from BetVictor’s Charlie McCann

Glorious Goodwood Thursday tips from BetVictor’s Charlie McCann There was plenty of rain on the Sussex Downs in the build up to racing yesterday and conditions are likely to be no better than on the soft side of good for the Gp 1 Nassau Stakes – one of the most eagerly-awaited races of the week at Glorious Goodwood. I am a massive Nezwaah fan but I would be staggered if she were seen at her best on the forecast ground and last month’s Pretty Polly Stakes winner is reluctantly overlooked. Indeed. It wouldn’t surprise me if Roger Varian pulls BetVictor’s 7/1 shot out of the race to wait for faster ground. The classic generation have won this corresponding race four times in the last five years and if dual Guineas’ winner Winter (15/8) stays today’s […]

Stradivarius wins Goodwood Cup

Stradivarius wins Goodwood Cup Big Orange’s bid for a third Goodwood Cup has been thwarted by three-year-old Stradivarius. The John Gosden-trained colt overhauled the front-running Big Orange inside the final 400 metres to beat him by 1-3/4 lengths. Stradivarius was the third of four winners on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST) for his jockey Andrea Atzeni who lost the first race on protest. The winner was cut to 6-1 for the St Leger at Doncaster on September 16 with sponsors William Hill and 4-1 with Ladbrokes. “Frankie (Dettori) controlled the race and came up the middle, thinking he didn’t want to be attacked hard on the rail which was clever of him,” Gosden said. “Our fellow stayed it out well. I knew he would get the trip. “Andrea was very confident. I said is that because you […]

Big Orange hard to beat in Goodwood Cup

Big Orange hard to beat in Goodwood Cup Trainer Charlie Appleby admits Qewy faces a big task to overthrow Big Orange in the Goodwood Cup as he prepares the stayer for a return trip to Australia. Qewy won the Geelong Cup and the Sandown Cup last year either side of a creditable fourth in the Melbourne Cup. He was fourth in the Queen Alexandra Stakes on his return to action and looks to be playing for a place at best in the latest leg of the British Champions Series. “I was pleased with his run at Ascot and he’s come out of it well,” Appleby said. “He probably found two-miles-six (4355m) a bit too far at Royal Ascot and dropping back in trip will suit him. “Big Orange is exceptionally good on quicker surfaces and […]

Beat the Monday blues with Charlie McCann’s best bets

Beat the Monday blues with Charlie McCann’s best bets Enable’s brilliant Ascot win in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes has seen her odds cut from 5/1 to 2/1 at BetVictor for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly on the first Sunday in October. At this stage, I can’t see past the brilliant John Gosden-trained filly for the end-of-season Parisian showpiece and I wouldn’t be surprised if the dual classic winner did not run again before the Arc, although connections are reported to still be considering a tilt at the Yorkshire Oaks next month. At Ayr this afternoon Addicted To You (3.00) races from a mark 6lbs higher than when scoring at Catterick earlier in the month and I take him to follow up in the two-mile handicap. That might not […]

Charlie McCann preview’s Ascot’s big mid-summer showpiece

Charlie McCann preview’s Ascot’s big mid-summer showpiece Only one to place to start this weekend’s racing preview and that is with the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot where the dual Oaks winner Enable (3.35) will bid to give the classic generation only a third win in this famous race in the last thirteen years. Enable is a daughter of Nathaniel, who was the last three-year-old colt to win this race back in 2011, and the recent rain will be a big help to John Gosden’s filly who may not have beat much at the Curragh last time – but she was very impressive. Enable is 11/10 at BetVictor to add her name to the King George roll-of-honour and, having already backed her for the Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly in October, […]
