Charlie McCann previews Day three of the Cheltenham Festival

Charlie McCann previews Day three of the Cheltenham Festival Day three of the Cheltenham Festival begins with the JLT Novices Chase and it is possible that the enigmatic Yorkhill could come home alone if his jumping stands the test. He can be very keen, however, and whilst I acknowledge that he is the most talented horse in the race he will have to jump better than he did in his last couple of starts and he is reluctantly overlooked. Politologue and Disko are much respected but I am going to take a chance on Top Notch (1. 30) who has lived up to his name in recent starts winning his last four including in Grade 1 company last time. The selection is 4/1 at BetVictor and I would be disappointed if he didn’t make the […]

Darren Goodbody’s Champion Bumper Preview

Darren Goodbody with a 10/1 shot for the Bumper Probably my favourite race of the entire four days, a race that can be a good guide for the following year’s Supreme Hurdle. The Irish have taken three of the past five renewals, but it has gone to British based trainers for the past two years and they are looking to make it a three timer. Willie Mullins has landed this race eight times which includes training the 2012 and 2013 winners, including the following year’s Supreme winner Champagne Fever. I have been whittling this year’s race down and managed to get it down to four contenders. I will start at the obvious place in Willie Mullins’ Carter McKay who heads the market. He will come into this with a 100% record intact. For me at […]

Charlie McCann previews a weekend of racing action

Charlie McCann previews a weekend of racing action The weekend racing has a lull before the storm feel with Cheltenham galloping towards us at a rate of knots and the waiting is almost over for the biggest week of the racing year. The big betting race today, however, is the Imperial Cup and top-weight Fixe Le Cap is likely to have his supporters having looked a juvenile who could go to the very top when winning his first couple of starts last season for Nicky Henderson. The gelding has not been seen on the track since finishing in midfield in the Fred Winter at Cheltenham last March but has been dropped 4lbs for that effort and he holds a couple of engagements at the Festival next week. You have to go back to 2010 for […]

Darren Goodbody previews the Supreme Novices Hurdle

Darren Goodbody previews the Supreme Novices Hurdle On average we will see 50,000 visitors a day at Prestbury Park for the 2017 Festival. I have been a keen goer to this meeting over the past decade plus but sadly I did not get to see Douvan in the flesh winning this prestigious contest. I have though been very much privileged to see the likes of Champagne Fever, Vautour, Al Ferof, Menorah and my very first visit all those years ago when Brave Inca landed the race. Nothing comes close to hear that Cheltenham roar around the whole of the Gloucestershire hills when the tape goes up to start the most prestigious National Hunt meeting in the world. Every year we see old champions renewing their challenge, mainly in different races taking on the new breed. […]

Jack Milner of previews Monday’s cards

Jack Milner of previews Monday’s cards Master Blueyes was the weekend’s standout performer, winning Kempton’s G2 Adonis Hurdle for trainer Alan King, and cut to 10/1 from 20s with BetVictor to continue his handler’s excellent record in the Triumph Hurdle on the fourth and final day of next month’s Cheltenham Festival. Odds-on favourite Charli Parcs came down two flights from home with the race seemingly in the balance and it will be fascinating to see where Nicky Henderson’s previously unbeaten gelding goes next. BetVictor eased him out to 10/1 for both the Triumph and the Supreme at the festival, with stablemate River Wylde cut to 12/1 from 20s for the latter after landing the G2 Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle under Nico de Boinville. It was another excellent Saturday for in-form pilot Adrian Heskin, winning the […]
